Q.
What should my A1c level be?
A.
An A1c test is a blood test that reveals how your blood sugar has been over the past 2-3 months. This test can show high blood sugar you are not aware of as a result of blood sugar testing times. The American Diabetes Association recommends an A1c goal for those with diabetes of less than 7%.
The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists recommends an A1c goal for those with diabetes of less than 6.5%.
Each person may have different goals for treating their diabetes. It is important to discuss blood sugar control goals with your diabetes educator or doctor so you know what to personally try to achieve.
While you already have a primary care physician, you may want to see a specialist in diabetes (Endocrinologist). An Endocrinologist is medical doctor who specializes in diseases including diabetes.
